BFR and IPC FAQs

How long does a BFR typically take?

A Biennial Flight Review usually consists of at least one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight time. However, the total duration may vary based on individual proficiency and specific needs.

What happens if I don’t complete an IPC within the required timeframe?

If you do not complete an Instrument Proficiency Check within the required period, you cannot act as pilot-in-command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR until you successfully complete an IPC.

Can I combine my BFR and IPC into a single session?

Yes, it’s possible to combine both into a single session, provided all required maneuvers and procedures for each are satisfactorily completed.

Do I need to bring any materials to my BFR or IPC?

It’s recommended to bring your pilot certificate, logbook, government-issued ID, and any personal flight equipment. Reviewing current FAR/AIM materials beforehand can also be beneficial.

How should I prepare for my BFR or IPC?

Reviewing pertinent regulations, airspace classifications, flight planning procedures, and practicing relevant flight maneuvers can help ensure a smooth and successful review.

International Student FAQs

Do you accept international students for flight training?

Yes, Murfreesboro Aviation welcomes students from all nationalities to join our flight training programs. Our experienced team is dedicated to guiding you through every step of the process, from mastering flight fundamentals to navigating the TSA approval process.

What is the TSA approval process for non-U.S. citizens?

All non-U.S. citizens must complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check to be eligible for flight training. This involves creating an account with the Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP) and submitting the required background information and documentation through the AFSP Candidate Website. The background check typically takes about two weeks, but processing times can vary.

Is TSA approval required for all types of flight training?

If you’re training in an aircraft under 12,500 lbs., TSA approval is required only if you’re pursuing training for an initial airman’s certificate, an instrument rating, or a multi-engine rating. If you already hold a U.S. Private Certificate or higher, no additional TSA authorization is required unless your certificate was issued based on a foreign license that has since expired.

Where can I find more information about the TSA's Alien Flight Training and Citizenship Validation Rule?

For a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to the TSA’s Alien Flight Training and Citizenship Validation Rule, please visit the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) website.
