What is a BFR?
Every private pilot must complete a Biennial Flight Review (BFR) every 24 months to retain currency. This process involves:
- Meeting with a flight instructor to review knowledge in the classroom.
- Completing an in-flight proficiency check to demonstrate your skills.
The minimum requirement for a BFR includes one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight time. In most cases, the process is completed within a single day. However, if you’ve been away from flying for an extended time, your instructor may recommend additional classroom time or splitting the BFR over two days.
What is an IPC?
If you have fallen out of instrument currency for more than six months, you’ll need an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) to regain your status. The IPC includes:
- A review of the areas of operation and tasks outlined in the instrument rating practical test standards.
- In-flight exercises to demonstrate instrument proficiency and operational safety.
Each IPC is tailored to your needs and ensures compliance with FAA standards. Our instructors provide a supportive environment to help you regain confidence and precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: How long does a BFR typically take?
A: A Biennial Flight Review usually consists of at least one hour of ground instruction and one hour of flight time. However, the total duration may vary based on individual proficiency and specific needs.
Q2: What happens if I don’t complete an IPC within the required timeframe?
A: If you do not complete an Instrument Proficiency Check within the required period, you cannot act as pilot-in-command under IFR or in weather conditions less than the minimums prescribed for VFR until you successfully complete an IPC.
Q3: Can I combine my BFR and IPC into a single session?
A: Yes, it’s possible to combine both into a single session, provided all required maneuvers and procedures for each are satisfactorily completed.
Q4: Do I need to bring any materials to my BFR or IPC?
A: It’s recommended to bring your pilot certificate, logbook, government-issued ID, and any personal flight equipment. Reviewing current FAR/AIM materials beforehand can also be beneficial.
Q5: How should I prepare for my BFR or IPC?
A: Reviewing pertinent regulations, airspace classifications, flight planning procedures, and practicing relevant flight maneuvers can help ensure a smooth and successful review.
